Our guest this week is Mariel Prion. As a sustainability and climate advocate, Mariel has been a dynamic force in championing environmental protection, women’s rights, and youth empowerment. Here is her full bio!
Mariel Angela O. Prion is a 22-year-old graduate of De La Salle University-Manila with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Behavioral Sciences Major in Organizational and Social Systems Development with a Minor Degree in European Studies. She advocates for Climate Action, Women’s Rights, Youth Empowerment, and Heritage Site Conservation while following the framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Mariel has been engaging with non-profit organizations (NGOs) for over 6 years. She has been spending her time and energy as a public speaker, youth leader, and volunteer for her advocacy and other charitable causes. She began her active role with NGOs in the year 2017 when she joined the Young Earth Scientists’ Society (YESS), a group of individuals who are passionate about Earth Sciences and environmental conservation where she got promoted to the position of Environment Sector Head in the year 2020-2021. She is also a former Executive for Public Relations at Sustainable PH Youth from 2021-2022, an NGO that is geared toward youth involvement in promoting sustainability nationwide.
Last October 2021, Mariel joined the Climate Reality Leadership Corps Global Training Program led by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, where she became a certified Climate Reality Leader and is now a Youth Core member at the Climate Reality Project Philippines. At present, she is a member of the Movers Programme under the United Nations Development Programme-Philippines; a regional movement of volunteers who educate groups and communities about the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In addition, she is a Research Volunteer at the Citizens’ Disaster Response Center (CDRC), where she helps the team collect and organize data and keep track of the latest natural and man-made disaster events in the country. She is also a youth volunteer at Childhope Philippines Foundation Inc., an NGO that aids street children in Metro Manila, and Greenpeace Philippines, an NGO that aims to protect the Earth’s biodiversity.
Mariel’s love for the environment and dedication to women and youth representation in various fields motivated her to enter beauty pageants to further promote her cause and bears the following titles of Miss Teen Glam Philippines 2019 and Miss Teen Glam International 2020. For her hard work and passion in regard to her advocacies, she became a recipient of the “Beauty Queen with a Purpose Award of the Year 2021-2022” at the Ganap TV International Awards last February 2022.
